THE body of an Arrochar man who was swept out to sea has been recovered.

Thomas McAulay, a member of the village’s Mountain Rescue Team, had been missing for more than a week after losing his footing while crossing a stream on the Isle of Rum.

He had been walking with a friend on Wednesday 20 September, when he was swept away by the swollen waterway.

The 60-year-old’s body was recovered on Sunday by his Mountain Rescue colleagues.

Mark Leyland, leader of the Arrochar Mountain Rescue Team, led the search for his friend’s body.

He said: “The conditions in the area were very different from the day Tam had disappeared and the river levels were at a much lower and safe level.

“The team abseiled down the gorge and located Tam’s body. We were assisted by the local coastguard and their helicopter to perform an evacuation.”

He added: “The team did their usual professional job in very difficult circumstances, both physically and emotionally. Whilst we are happy to have found Tam, obviously this is still tinged with a great deal of sadness.

“The team would like to extend their sympathy to his family and friends at this very difficult time.”
