Trees Face Axe
By Frances Ridge
CONTROVERSIAL plans to uproot a row of mature trees came under scrutiny this week.
Residents in Prince Albert Terrace were concerned when they discovered a proposed development could end their views onto leafy Victoria Road.
Councillors at yesterday's Helensburgh and Lomond Area Committee meeting were set to make a decision on whether the plans would be given the green-light.
The proposed development — situated in one of Helensburgh's conservation areas — would comprise of five detached houses, eight flats and the formation of a new access route from Victoria Road.
Howard Young, of Argyll and Bute Council development services, recommended that the committee granted planning permission subject to a Planning Advice Notice (PAN) 41 Hearing as the development is not in keeping with policy.
While all house plots within the Upper Helensburgh Conservation Area are required to be no bigger than 0.1 hectare — the proposed development is around 1.7 acres.
Councillor for Helensburgh Central, John Tacchi, agreed a hearing would be the best step. He said: `Most of the objections have been regarding the trees and parking spaces. I would agree we need a PAN 41 Hearing before making a decision.`
A date for the hearing has yet to be decided.
