Family face-off

A CARING Cardross family have brought a new meaning to the old saying charity begins at home.

David Fleming is competing AGAINST his teenage daughter Sarah as they try to outdo each other with their respective charity nights.

The friendly competition began when the do-good duo approached the Commodore Hotel for a date to run a charity event and were offered two different nights.

While piper David thought a family ceilidh would be the best way to generate cash for charity, Sarah believed a live rock band would be more profitable — and decided to challenge her dad in a bid to see which night proved more successful.

Daring dad David accepted the challenge and hired the Osprey Suite at the hotel for both nights — the family ceilidh is on March 17 and the rock concert will be held on March 24.

David said: `I think Sarah will probably beat me but I haven't told her that. I have limited numbers for my ceilidh so she will get more people going to the concert.

`I have never done anything like this before. It is a lot of hard work but I didn't want it to be like a sponsored walk where you're asking people for money without them getting involved. I wanted it to be something they will all enjoy.`

Both fundraising events will initially fund a Celtic Spectacular benefit concert called The Full Dokey in the Victoria Halls on October 13, all proceeds will then be donated to Maggie's Cancer Centre at the Western Infirmary in Glasgow.

David said: `Maggie's Centre is a cancer support service. It offers emotional support, relaxation and calm.

`There's a link between cancer recovery and having a positive attitude, they reinforce this at Maggie's.`

Helensburgh band Crowded Croft will be playing at the ceilidh as well as David on his pipes, a 10-year-old piper from Strathaven and Cardross violinist Ryan Young.

Revellers at the Rock Concert will hear The Kick and White Ace, with DJs Sinky and Tall Maule hosting the event.

Tickets are £7.50 for both events and are available from The Pet shop in Helensburgh or by calling David or Sarah on 01389 842040.
