DISGRACE: One of the areas targeted by vandals.

A tight-knit community has condemned racist vandals who covered their village in anti-Jewish graffiti.

Shocked residents in Garelochhead awoke on Sunday to find anti-Semitic messages daubed with black paint on cars and buildings.

Vandals went on an overnight rampage, along Hepburn Road, Upland Road, Upland Wynd, Edge Lane and Mary Browne Walk, targeting a garage, a walkway, homes and vehicles.

George Freeman, Councillor for Lomond North, said he was “deeply concerned” about the attack.

He added: “Graffiti is never nice, but when you get something like this which appears to be targeting one sector of the community it’s very worrying.

“Garelochhead is a very diverse community and this has never been an issue before.

“It’s concerning because graffiti is so visible. It’s a bit of a shock and we all hope it’s a one-off.

Councillor Freeman continued: “Most residents are far from happy. I doubt there are many people in the village who would condone something like this. Often youngsters are associated with graffiti but I don’t know why teenagers would spray something about Jewish people.”

The chilling slogans and symbols were sprayed onto a least four buildings and two parked cars some time between 11pm on Saturday and 8.15am on Sunday morning.

The councillor, who lives in the village, added: “I have discussed this with the police and we are hoping they will apprehend whoever is responsible and nip this thing in the bud before it gets any worse.

“Not only is it offensive, there are also the costs involved in getting it removed.

“Trying to get it cleaned up is now my main priority because the quicker it comes off the less chance their is of this becoming a bigger problem.

“It’s not a problem we would normally have here.”

Anyone who has information which could help the police with their enquiries should contact Garelochhead Police Station on 01436 810222.
