Car trip doc set to Jogle on
By Steve McElroy
MOTORING ON; 1953 Morris Minor with Rhu registration.
A GYNAECOLOGIST on a charity drive will be making a special trip through Rhu because of his classic car’s registration number.
The 1953 Morris Minor convertible with the unique plate RHU 27, belongs to Tim Pocock.
He will be marking 60th anniversary celebrations for the Morris Minor in June, by taking part in an endurance run from John O’Groats to Lands End (JOGLE) — brainchild of the Barnsley Morris Minor Owners Club.
The 24 hour trip, covering approximately 900 miles, starts from 11am on Tuesday June 10 until 11am the following day.
He said: “Because of the association between the registration number of my car and the village of Rhu, I will be passing through it on my way to John O’Groats on Monday June 9.
“The car belonged to my mother from 1953 and I learned to drive in it. I took it on a journey through southern Europe when I was a student and I have kept it ever since. She has required a quite a lot of work more recently to bring her up to modern standards, and completed the JOGLE two years ago.”
Mr Pocock has a special interest in gynaecological cancer and hopes to raise funds for his local cancer support group.
Whilst primarily a Morris Minor event, the run is open to other classic cars and is described as an endurance run. The aim is for drivers and passengers to enjoy themselves and complete the run safely within 24 hours, to qualify for a finisher’s plaque.
