THEY'RE GRRREAT: Arrochar Primary pupils start their day the sunshine way.
Youngsters at Arrochar Primary have munched their way to a top award.
The school’s breakfast club was named one of the UK’s best examples of outstanding community involvement by a national awards scheme.
Eileen Kay, who set up the school’s breakfast club two years ago, said: “We are thrilled our club has been recognised.
“Since the breakfast facility began, we have worked hard to ensure its survival as a vital service to children of lone parents, working parents and low income families.”
The school offers youngsters a variety of healthy options to tuck into before lessons begin.
Head teacher Alison Palmer said: “The up take has been brilliant. The breakfast club has gone from strength to strength. It’s a fantastic facility and about a third of the school take advantage of it.
“It doesn’t cost the kids anything and they love to come along. We try to make it a fun time where the children get a chance to socialise before lessons start. We are delighted to have won the award and hope that we can secure funding to continue the breakfast club next year.”
The National Breakfast Club Plus Awards, run by leading learning charity ContinYou in Partnership with Kellogg’s, reward best practice in five different categories, including community involvement, achieving social and emotional well-being, nutrition, achieving sustainability and added value activities.
Judges selected Arrochar Primary Breakfast Club as runner-up in the Community Involvement category.
They were impressed by the close partnerships forged between the group and community organisations including the Helensburgh and Lomond Volunteer Tutor Organisation and the Homelink Project.
The club was also praised for securing funding and developing relationships with parents, villagers, the parish church, the Arrochar and Tarbet Gala Committee, Eve Contractors, Hannah Stirling and the Loch Long Hotel.
Bruce Learner, Community and Social Responsibility Manager from Kellogg’s said: “Arrochar Primary School Breakfast Club is inspiring. Here is a club that exemplifies the power of an initiative run by the community, for the community.
“Loved by both pupils and volunteers alike, the club offers both a nutritious breakfast and somewhere safe for children to chill-out before the start of the school day.”
Tony Apicella, Business Development Director from ContinYou, added: “A breakfast club that integrates with its community greatly enhances the quality of life of both the young people and community members and can become an incubator and springboard for a series of community partnerships that benefit its wider members.”
