Public's chance to hear heritage idea

THE public will get the chance to hear first hand from the man behind ambitious proposals for a Helensburgh heritage project.

Phil Worms — who suggested that Helensburgh could look to its famous sons and daughters as a positive catalyst for stimulating regeneration in the area — has arranged a public meeting in room 4 of the Victoria Halls on Thursday May 22.

At the meeting, Phil will outline the potential for his Helensburgh Heroes idea — and any interested member of the local community is welcome to attend.

In an interview with the Advertiser two weeks ago, Phil said he had identified two possible locations — the Sinclair Street reservoirs and the Clyde Street School building — as possible sites for the provision of innovative community/tourist facilities. Among his ideas for the locations were a cinema, arts centre, environmental field study centre, outdoor leisure activities and, finally, the potential for establishing Scotland’s first formal ‘Hollywood style’ walk of fame.

Phil, pictured right, said: “The public meeting is not about presenting a set of definite cut and dried plans, it is more about highlighting the potential and opportunity that we have as a community and how we might actively realise this.”

Phil’s presentation will outline how the town’s heritage can be used as an “umbrella” for the area, how this can then manifest itself into real tourist and community facilities, how it can involve the area’s children and youth, and finally what needs to happen to ensure that it actually materialises.

Phil added: “If people leave the meeting feeling motivated, and fired up about the area, and with a personal desire to make this happen, then it will have achieved its objectives.

“This meeting is not about some bloke presenting a range of ideas that will never see the light of day nor is it a platform to complain about potholes or refuse collection, important as they might be. It’s about the community feeling positive about this wonderful area and wanting to put something back for future generations.”
