Grace names games mascot
VIVID IMAGINATION: Grace Laverty with Sephton MacQuire of the games committee, Tony Page of Ensign Motifs and Iain McQuire.
A NEW personality will be featuring prominently in the area over the coming weeks, when he helps promote the new Helensburgh and Lomond Highland Games.
Six-year-old Rhu Primary pupils Grace Laverty emerged triumphant from a competition to name the games mascot, when her suggestion, Macaulay, was picked from 58 names tabled by pupils.
Macaulay — a hairy Scotsman, wearing a kilt, and leaning on a hammer with his thumb in the air — is featured on merchandise — including t-shirts. Grace received a prize presentation after her entry was selected by the judges. She received a goody bag including a family ticket to the games, thought to be the first for more than 30 years, which are being held on Saturday June 21.
The youngster was also treated to a trip round the Ensign Motifs factory, in Kilcreggan, which is sponsoring the heavy athletic events in the games and also making t-shirts featuring new mascot, Macaulay.
Sephton MacQuire, Games vice chairman and events co-ordinator, said the committee was “a bit disappointed” that more schools in Helensburgh and Lomond did not take part in the competition to name the mascot.
He added, however, that they were pleased with the numerous name suggestions they had received. There were lots of different names suggested for the mascot, but the judges felt that Macaulay suited the character.
“Grace was delighted to receive her prize and seemed very impressed with her tour round Ensign Motifs,” he said.
