ART ATTACK: Stewart McKendrick presents Nicola Petrie with her framed design.

A COLOURFUL poster by a primary six pupil was chosen to highlight the 10th anniversary of the annual Rhu and Shandon Gala Day.

The imaginative design by Nicola Petrie, of Rhu Primary, captured the judge’s eye and not only won her a prize but her school also benefited. Nicola’s prize-winning drawing will also be used to promote the special day in June.

The presentation to Nicola and runners-up was held at the school last week, where the lucky winner was presented with a framed print of herposter and a £20 book token for Bookworms in Helensburgh from Stewart McKendrick, Gala Committee member.

Runners-up in the competition were Katie Ward, of Primary 2, who was chosen in second place, and Ailsa Calder of Primary 1.

Members of the Gala Committee also presented a cheque to head teacher Anne Milne for the purchase of sports equipment for the school.

A brochure listing a programme of events — including celebrations for the gala’s 10th anniversary — has been drawn up for the big day on June 5.

Included in the four-hour Gala Day, which starts at noon, will be a procession from the marina followed by a fancy dress competition for under and over 5s.

There will also be samba and highland dancing displays, and music provided by the Damascus Road Gospel Band and Helensburgh Pipe Band. There will also be Julie’s Funky Fitness Family Fun Workout, a Sea Cadets rigging demonstration and a raffle and tombola. along with a variety of stalls with a wide-range of goods.

Following last year’s event the committee was able to provide substantial donations to the local community.
