Roads cash
A MAJOR roads improvement programme for routes in the Helensburgh and Lomond area has been drawn up.
Councillors have earmarked a budget for the projects, set to take place between now and 2010.
The Capital Reconstruction Allocation increased to £311,600 per annum for the area until 2009, but it is hoped that the cash sum will increase further to £630,000 for the Helensburgh area up until 2010.
Projects will be allocated cash on a priority basis after assessment through a road condition survey, coupled with information provided by the Argyll and Bute authority’s technical staff following detailed inspections.
The improvements programme was outlined to members of Helensburgh and Lomond Area Committee last week, by Alan Kerr, Area Roads and Amenity Services Manager, who said that there is “very little” being spent on footpaths in the proposed 2008-09 programme, as the capital is being earmarked for the area’s carriageways — many of which residents say are in desperate need of repair.
Mr Kerr said: “This shows that the council has put a lot more money into the roads network.”
Councillor Gary Mulvaney complained about the traffic lights at the junction of Sinclair Street and Clyde Street, saying that he felt there should be a filter system in place.
Mr Kerr pointed out that such a move would involve removing part of the footpath on the eastbound side of the road to widen it for approach lanes.
Councillor Vivien Dance asked how long pipeline installation works in West King Street, are set to take and was told that the work is currently at the design stage and is “close to being put out to tender.”
Councillor Danny Kelly said he was pleased to see work planned for South and North Ailey Roads in Kilcreggan.
