SAFETY FIRST: Councillor Robb and Police and Crime Prevention Panel representatives at the project's launch.

ELDERLY and vulnerable people are being urged to obtain a special sticker to remind them to beware of bogus callers at their home.

The yellow message, which should be stuck to the inside of householders’ front doors, highlights six points to follow BEFORE they open up to unknown callers.

The special ‘Beware Bogus Callers’ stickers were launched last week on behalf of the volunteer members of Helensburgh and District Crime Prevention Panel — with the full backing of the police — by burgh Councillor James Robb.

The panel has printed 3,000 stickers which are available free from libraries, doctors surgeries, community centres and police offices throughout Helensburgh and Lomond.

The sticker provides simple and practical advice that householders can follow to help protect themselves and their property from unscrupulous and criminal tradesmen.

Patricia Smith, panel chairwoman, said: “Although we don’t have a problem with bogus callers, we want to get through to people so that they know what to look out for. They can put the stickers on their front doors to remind them. We are trying to be proactive so that bogus callers do not become a problem in the area as has happened elsewhere.

“Nearly all those who are targeted by bogus callers are elderly or vulnerable people and this is one of the ways we can help. It is also a way of reminding people to keep their doors locked and to use a door chain if they have one.”
