CRUMBLING: Red Arrows' Station Park home.

AN amateur football team have launched a red alert — because of the state of their changing rooms.

The condition of the pavilion of the Cardross Red Arrows 15s football team certainly doesn’t live up to the standards of their flashy namesakes.

Now they are appealing to local suppliers to provide them with materials, so that they can make improvements to their rundown Station Park changing rooms.

Coach Paul Ward said: “We have plenty of volunteers to help refurbish the facility, but a lack of materials or funds.

“The building has deteriorated over the last 18 months, especially the homeside changing rooms where the roof is leaking. Part of the shower room floor collapsed, so we need to put a new floor in.

“If anyone can help with materials, particularly companies who have leftover wood or felt lying around, it would be greatly appreciated.

“The dad of one of our players is a builder and he is willing to take on the job.”

The outside of the wood cladding structure is “falling to pieces” and the building isn’t wind or water tight.

Paul added: “The building has been standing for about 10 or 12 years since the original pavilion burned down. The council decided to make the building of cladding wood to match the nearby tennis and bowling clubs, but it’s disintegrating.

“If we can get the materials, a few of the parents are willing to come in and fix it up. We were going to make a start on some of the repairs but the builder said that we should wait until we have got the materials so the job can be done properly. We also need wooden joists, roofing sheets, tar, paint, sand and cement.

“It may be that some big companies have been doing a job, have a few roofing sheets left over and could give us some. It wouldn’t take much. We need some timber for beams.”

Paul said they were hoping to make repairs by the end of September before the bad weather sets in.

The park, which is also used by Cardross Amateurs, belongs to the Cardross Trust who have given the club £300 towards the cost of repairs.

Cardross Red Arrows are about to start their sixth season in the Dunbartonshire Football Development League.

Paul recalled how the team got its name: “We played our first game on the day of the Faslane Fair and just as we scored our very first goal, the Red Arrows air display team flew overhead. At that time the boys were turning up in red shirts including Manchester United’s and we thought it was an appropriate name to use.”

Anyone who thinks they can help the squad, should contact Paul on 01389 841587.
