Navy dad Hugh salutes his girl
Fifty-year-old Warrant Officer Hugh Porter left the Royal Navy at the weekend after 32 years of seriously hard graft with the Senior Service — saluting one last officer as he went.
He was the Base Warrant Officer at HM Naval Base Clyde and, as the most senior sailor on the Base who was not actually a commissioned officer, he proudly carried a silver-tipped cane as a mark of respect that his status deserved.
As regulations demanded, he saluted all officers – and they returned that salute – but Hugh, originally from London, though now a 20-year and permanent resident of Helensburgh, also beamed with pride when he had to salute one particular 22-year-old Sub-Lieutenant — his daughter Nancy.
