Burgh flood drama as deluge strikes
By Steve McElroy
A DESPERATE householder wielded a pick axe to try to avert a flow of water which threatened to engulf his home yesterday (Wednesday).
A build-up of several feet of water lay on a hilly grassed area just a few feet from the home of Gregor Angus in Churchill Square, Helensburgh.
A pool several inches deep lapped around his front doorstep and those of his neighbours.
But in a desperate bid to avoid the water level rising further and flooding his home, Mr Angus took a pick axe to a corner of the wasteland so that the deluge would run away from his house and down the street.
As he hacked through the grass and mud, Mr Angus managed to create a channel and let the torrent of water flow into the street and away from his property.
