For sale
By Fiona Howard
ONE of Helensburgh’s landmark buildings is going on the market.
And news of the proposed sale of the former Clyde Street School, a category B listed building, was greeted with delight by Phil Worms whose Helensburgh Heroes project has captured the imaginations of many local people.
He said: “From my point of view this is an exciting opportunity.
“Helensburgh Heroes will have to move quickly now to build a business case which will prove best value for the town and the council. My understanding is that the council is putting the building on the market to assess the interest and the news comes as no surprise.
A spokesman for the council said: “The former Community Education Centre on Clyde Street is to be put on the market as part of the regeneration of Helensburgh town centre and waterfront. This is one of several options being considered, but Argyll and Bute Council, which owns the listed building, will be looking for offers which will ensure that it is brought back into use.”
And Councillor James Robb, Chairman of the Council’s Helensburgh and Lomond Area Committee, said: “The council has been looking at options for improving services to the public in Helensburgh and Lomond, and one of these is the construction of a new building in the town centre, which will bring together public services and community facilities under one roof.
“As a part of this process, we have been reviewing the condition and possible uses for our existing properties.
