A £1.3 million project which could change lives is about to get under way in Garelochhead.

Route 81, the innovative and ambitious youth club project in Garelochhead and Portincaple, is soon to get the keys of the former Garelochhead Outdoor Centre and begin work on transforming it into one of the the best youth and community facilities in Scotland.

A grant of £563,697 from the Scottish Rural Development Programme added to a previous Big Lottery grant of £773,000 means that the group is only £29,000 short of their target for the whole project and they can now buy the rundown centre from its current owners Dunbritton Housing Association.

And now all that is needed is for the Communities Scotland housing regulator to give the go ahead for the ownership to be transferred to Route 81 and that is expected any day now.

The Rev. Alastair Duncan who chairs Route 81 is out of the country on holiday this week but local coucillor George Freeman who has worked very closely with the project team said: “This has taken a lot of work and commitment on the part of the Route 81 team - this sort of thing doesn’t just happen.

“Most of the funding is in place now and things are looking good for what will be one of the best youth facilities in the area.”
