Woman's despair at derelict building

“I COULD have cried”. That was one Rosneath woman’s reaction to news that Historic Scotland have halted the demolition of the old community centre in the village.

Jill Freitag lives in the flat above the village supermarket and looks out on to the crumbling building — as well as having to cope with children climbing onto the roof outside her living room windows.

“I was so upset when I saw the story in the Advertiser last week”, she said. “I bought this flat four years ago because I had been told the building was going to be demolished but, since then, nothing has happened and it is just getting worse and worse.”

She continued: “When I moved in, Somerfield owned the shop and the building. I was told they were going to demolish it and use the land to extend the shop.

"Six months later Somerfield sold it to the Co-op and their plan was to demolish it and use the space for a much-needed car park.

“I just don’t understand why Historic Scotland have done this. Everyone in the village wants this building removed. It’s an eyesore and we want rid of it.”
