RESCUE: Barmaid Angela Murray saw the stricken woman from the Clyde Bar's window.

A  BRAVE barmaid plunged into the freezing waters of the River Clyde to rescue a customer intent on making a suicide bid.

The distraught woman waded chest deep into the cold water on the foreshore in Helensburgh’s West Clyde Street followed by barmaid Angela Murray, who heroically chased after her.

Despite the woman saying she wanted to die, Angela managed to calm her down and grab hold of her before leading her back to the safety of the shore.

Another bar regular, Davie Easton, aided the rescue, wading into the water to help before wrapping his jacket around the stricken woman.

Police called to the scene led the woman away and took her to Vale of Leven Hospital for treatment.

The drama took place at around 6pm on Sunday as 21-year-old Angela served at the Clyde Bar.

She said: “The woman was in the pub and had been drinking and chatting. She said something about her boyfriend cheating on her the night before. She started a wee bit of a ruckus, but it wasn’t much and she left the bar.

“About half an hour later I saw her running across the grass on the other side of the road and I thought she had fallen onto the beach but then she took her top off and made a beeline for the water.”

Angela dashed out of the pub, ran across the busy road and by the time she reached the shore, the woman — thought to have been in her early 20s — was in water higher than waist deep.
