Bowie hit to boost Burgh

A ‘LIVE Aid’ style recording of a David Bowie classic hit is to take place in Helensburgh — with local people invited to take part.

The performance of the song Heroes will be filmed and recorded in the Victoria Halls with professional musicians and local people of all ages and musical ability taking part.

Proceeds will go towards the £8.6m Helensburgh Heroes project which is aimed at buying and transforming the East Clyde Street Centre and turning it into a community and visitor attraction.

The unique idea is the brainchild of Phil Worms, who is spearheading the Helensburgh Heroes project, and he has already obtained permission from Fairwood Music Publishing, who own the song’s copyright.

He has also received the support of Helensburgh born Kenny Hyslop, a drummer who has played with Live Aid founder Midge Ure in both his bands Slik and Ultravox, and with Scots band Simple Minds whom Phil hopes will also take part.

The main hall of sthe Victoria Halls has been booked for Saturday January 14 for the actual recording of the Bowie/Eno written song.

Explained Phil: “We are hoping that we will attract a large number of local people of all ages and musical ability to the venue in the morning of the day. We can accommodate a maximum of 300 folks for logistical and safety reasons. The major part of the day from 9am until 2.30pm will be spent rehearsing and arranging the music.”
