HEADS were bowed in silence at war memorials across the district on Sunday as people remembered the servicemen killed in conflicts around the world.
Marking the 90th anniversary of Armistice Day this year’s memorial services were especially poignant, many of them attended by war veterans from conflicts long past and some from conflicts that are still going on today.
In Helensburgh the traditional parade from Hermitage Primary School to the Cenotaph in Hermitage Park led by the Helensburgh branch of the Royal British Legion was joined by uniformed cadets from all three services and the uniformed youth groups from the town.
As those who wished to pay tribute to the fallen gathered in the park in bitter winds many local dignitaries joined them to lay wreaths including Provost Billy Petrie, Commodore Chris Hockley and a representative of the Lord Lieutenant.
There were British Legion members, members of the Submariners’ Association, a serving soldier home on leave as well as representatives of the police and fire service.
The service was conducted by the Rev Gavin McFadyen of Park Church and the rain held off until it was over.
Representatives of the Legion along with the Provost then went to Christie Park in Alexandria to join the service there while others attended the ceremony at Shandon War Memorial and a short service at the American Cairn in Rosneath.
That brief ceremony was conducted by the Rev Fred Booth and was his third Remembrance Service that day having also conducted the services in Cove and at Rosneath St Modan’s. The service at Cove War Memorial was held in driving rain and biting winds.
Remembrance Services were also held in Garelochhead Parish Church and at the war memorials in Luss and Arrochar.
