Rhu's woe
By Helensburgh Sport Scene
Rhu Amateurs 3 Glasgow University 4
RHU went into this game knowing that East Kilbride's midweek win had already demoted them to Division Two next season — but their aim was still to collect the three points.
With Patrick Scullion unavailable, Martin Gall came into midfield.
Last Saturday, against Links, Rhu lost a goal within five minutes and they were to repeat this in similar circumstances against Glasgow Uni.
But they came back strongly and equalised when a fine McMillan cross was despatched into the bottom corner of the net by an alert Neil Smith.
Midway through the half Rhu went ahead when an Allan Young free kick was powerfully headed into the net by Davie Falconer.
Rhu were in control and increased their lead when a speculative shot by McMillan deceived the keeper to put Rhu 3-1.
At this stage it looked a matter of how many, but Rhu gave Uni a lifeline when a mix-up between Black and Connor resulted in a Uni striker having the easy task of rolling the ball into the net.
Rhu’s defence were jittery now and struggling to deal with Uni's long ball tactics.
Uni’s strikers were winning most of the balls in the air and in a 10 minute spell equalised and went ahead after poor Rhu defending.
Rhu reshuffled their defence and steadied the ship but the remainder of the game was to prove to be a disappointment as there was no further scoring.
This was the third time in four weeks that Rhu had surrendered a lead, with a grateful Uni team happy to collect the three points.
Rhu Amateurs: Connor, Smallwood, McDonald, Young, Black, Falconer, Gall, N Smith, Ferguson, McMillan, Miller. Sub: Walker.
Next Saturday Rhu are away to promotion chasing Balmore, with the match set to kick-off at 2.30pm.
Some tickets are still available for Rhu's presentation night on Friday May 26 at the Rosslea Hotel, with ex-Celtic and Scotland player Murdo MacLeod the main speaker.
Rhu Amateurs would like to congratulate local team St Patrick’s FP’s on their historic Scottish Cup victory on Sunday against Falkirk AFC at Hampden Park.
