Evening races end

LAST Wednesday saw the last race in this year’s evening series at Helensburgh Sailing Club, bringing a tear to many an eye.

The race started in a decent north westerly breeze, spurring race officer Rosie into setting an optimistic course, with the leading three cats stranded in darkness and feeble winds.

However, they did manage a finish, with Richie Furbat in his A class Red Hot Snapper scoring a first, Neil McIntosh in his Dart Spi second and Homer in his SXL third.

In the fast handicap class Spud Flannigan and his delightful assistant Shona Wallace, in the Laser 2000, whipped Neil Manderson’s and Andy Clegg’s Laser 4000, whilst the flying Grudunza brothers Darren Booth and Chris Laverty, in their 49er, were to be happy with their moral over the water win and third on handicap.

Merv, in his Blaze, defeated Ollie Milton’s Contender in the handicap class, whilst young Alan McIntosh was just pipped for first by Iona Stewart in the novice class, though young McIntosh was delighted with his overall series win.

Sunday saw a glorious day greet the assembled nippers for the junior trophy races.

Three round robin races were sailed under the watchful eye of race officer David Wilson and assistant ‘Big Tone.’

The children, celebrating the end of the year’s training, enjoyed this day of racing in Toppers and the Club picos and were spurred on by the assembled parents aboard committee boat Sheana.

Racing was tight and proved how much the youngsters had come on under the expert guidance of their tutors throughout the year.

Three of the children — Katherine Bull, Ewan Gogh and Morgan Serpell — had never raced solo before.

Morgan, revelling in his solo joy, won the Picos too, closely followed by David Abraham, while Katherine Bull was third.

In the Topper class it was a fight between the more experienced, with Lisa Jeffrey taking first just two points ahead of Alan McIntosh.

Katrina Wylie came third, only a point behind, and included a win in her scoreline.

To finish off the afternoon the barbeque was lit, followed by the prizegiving where all the young sailors were rewarded for their efforts.
