Sports stars honoured
HELENSBURGH and Lomond Area Sports Council held their Annual Sports Personality of the Year Awards Ceremony in Helensburgh Cricket and Rugby Football Club last Wednesday.
The event was hosted by Betty Colmer, president of the Sports Council, who welcomed everyone and gave a short resume of what the Sports Council has done over the past year, before calling on councillor Ellen Morton to present the awards.
The Anne Hill Memorial Award was presented to Catherine Clark, for her achievements throughout the year in athletics.
Catherine has represented Helensburgh Amateur Athletic Club (HAAC) at numerous Scottish Athletic indoor and outdoor competitions, achieving first, second and third placings in various events, and was U-13s HAAC champion for 2005.
She was also the Lomond School champion for her age category and topped off the year by winning bronze medal at the Scottish Athletic Championships in the U-13 girls high jump.
The Barry Williams Memorial Award was presented to Sean McNee for his achievements throughout the year in rugby.
Sean was a central figure in the Helensburgh U-18 league-winning side, represented Glasgow District in the U-17 district championships and was made captain.
He has recently returned from a SRU camp involving potential international players of the future.
The Sports Disability Award was presented to Shawn Lawrence.
Shawn has been a valued member of Helensburgh Swimming Team since he was 10-years-old.
He progressed to be capped in recent years for his country as a junior and ended the year as junior male captain, with many medals to his credit.
He has now moved to the Scottish senior squad and this year he also entered the DSE World Trials, making it to the finals.
The John McGinlay Memorial Shield for Coach of the Year was awarded to Neil Gow.
Neil has been coaching karate for over 30 years.
During his competitive years, he was placed third in the European Championships and fought for Scotland and Great Britain.
He is also an international level referee.
He has produced numerous students to the level of Scottish and British Champion and has rekindled the interest of karate in Helensburgh.
This year, there were no nominations received for the Murray and Biggar Team Trophy, which meant the award wasn’t presented to anyone, and sports clubs were encouraged to nominate candidates in the future.
On behalf of the Sports Council, the president thanked councillor Morton for presenting the awards and the parents and other councillors for their attendance.
