And they're off

HELENSBURGH Amateur Athletics Club flew the flag at the prestigious annual Glasgow University five mile race — with a whole host of great performances.

Paul Thompson did well in a quality field to come in 32nd in a time of 27.54 and first V50.

Unfortunately, the Glasgow University students didn’t award a prize to the more mature runner, so Paul had to content himself with victory over an old Fife rival.

Julia Henderson was placed fifth woman in 30.47, narrowly beating Ross McInroy, who finished well in 30.59.

Jenny Fitzgerald, on the comeback after her superb run in the Amsterdam marathon, was pleased with 34.47.

Alistair Wylie and Jan Fellowes battled it out around the two-lap course to finish in 35.24 and 35.37 respectively.

Further afield, David Spy ran a brave race to complete the unforgivingly hilly Cornish marathon in three hours and 53 minutes.

Having run the Loch Ness Marathon in 3:37 only six weeks earlier, a post marathon rest is surely in order for the marathon man.
