Poor show from Lomond

Printer Print Article

THIS match just about sums up Lomond’s season so far — when they are good, they are very, very good, but when they are bad, they are awful.

Sloppy defending from the start was punished at every opportunity by Greenock’s number six, who took a part in all of their goals.

She outran every member of the Lomond defence, who allowed her to take the ball into the D and have as many shots on goal as she liked.

Within 15 minutes Greenock were two-up, with both goals coming from short corners.

The sloppy defending was matched by the Lomond forwards who missed many a chance to take the game by letting the open goal go unpunished.

Eventually they got their act together and mirrored the goals at the opposite end by scoring both from short corners.

Exley and McMeeking found the back of the net for Lomond.

Both these goals came in the last 10 minutes of the half, and if the Greenock goalie hadn’t been so swift, it could have been more.

The midfield, who need to learn the basic rule in hockey of looking before you pass, were no better — making brilliant and accurate passes, straight to the sticks of their opposition.

At half-time Lomond swapped a few players around, but seemed to be very shaky again.

Basic skills, like running to meet the ball instead of waiting for it to come to you, were sadly lacking in the Lomond line-up.

Greenock took full advantage and managed to get another two goals from short corners.

Lomond put the pressure on again in the last 10 minutes, but were unable to pull anything back.

This was a decidedly lacklustre performance from Lomond, peppered with moments of sheer brilliance.

If Lomond continue in this manner for the remainder of the season, they will be lucky to stay in the first division.

Player of the match: E Ritchie, who battled for every ball.

Lomond: Madden, Ritchie, Skrastin, Finnen, McMeeking, Young, Burnet, Exley, McIlroy, Laing, Lyall, Greenwood.

Lomond were kindly sponsored by Stirling and Gilmour Solicitors.
