Rhu overcome league leaders
Cambusbarron Rovers 1
Rhu Amateurs 2
RHU travelled to Stirling on Saturday to face top-of-the-table Cambusbarron and, after a hard-fought 90 minutes, left with a deserved three points.
Rhu were shooting down the infamous slope in the first half and had the home team on the back foot from the start.
Falconer almost put the visitors ahead after two minutes, but his shot was wide.
However, the opener wasn’t long in coming and it was a Stevie Smith corner after five minutes which hit off a defender before finding the back of the net.
Rhu continued to dominate, with the home team just happy to clear their lines.
Smallwood almost made it two when his shot hit the base of the post and Falconer and Beck both came close.
Rovers tried to make their physical presence felt as they tried to get back into the game, but it was Rhu who went further ahead when Stevie Smith powered home a header from a Ross MacDonald free-kick.
Rovers had found it hard to make an impression, with Rhu playing their best football of the season.
The second half was always going to be difficult, with the home team having the advantage of the slope.
Keeper Heron was soon called into action and he bravely came out to block a through ball, taking a knock in the process.
This was not to be the last late challenge on the keeper as Rovers desperately tried to get into the game.
Midway through the half Rovers almost pulled a goal back when a cross from the right deceived Heron, but MacDonald was on hand to clear the goal-line.
Although Rovers were piling on the pressure, Rhu’s defence stood firm.
The visitors also had their moments, with Smith, Falconer and Gall all coming close.
With 15 minutes left a late challenge on Heron left him struggling for the rest of the game.
Almost immediately a Rovers free-kick ended up in the net as the keeper struggled to get there.
This was the signal for Rovers to shoot on sight and it was MacDonald to the rescue again with another goal-line clearance.
Rhu weathered the storm and despite having to play seven minutes of injury time, they held on for the deserved win.
This Saturday, Rhu are at home to Stirling University, with a 2pm kick-off.
Rhu: Heron, MacDonald, Black, Miller, McMillan, Smallwood, Scullion, George, Beck, Smith, Falconer. Subs: Gall, Fleming.
