Mixed results for Lomond rugby

In the senior game Lomond fielded what was described as an ‘A’ side – a team consisting entirely of S5 and S6 boys but not necessarily the full strength 1st XV.

Perhaps as a result of this the team started slowly and Kelvinside were able to take an early lead in the first half.

After the break, the team showed more cohesion and scored a well worked try in the corner through Robbie Liddell.

Sustained Lomond pressure was not enough to change the course of the match and the visitors were able to hang on to their first half lead to win 22-5.

S3/4 XV fought out a dour encounter with the West End visitors in a game played in cloying mud and with a fair degree of edge to it, but Kelvinside shaded the match with a 10-5 victory.

There was, however, more joy for Lomond’s junior teams at Balgray with the S2 team producing some of their best rugby of the season to demolish Kelvinside 68-0.

Star turn was Lomond stand off David Sterry who scored 5 tries and 9 conversions with big performances from captain, Hamish Thomson, and scrum half Liam Chambers.

The S1 team also had an emphatic victory, this time by 27-0, and coach Peter Orr was pleased with the direct running of his team which also played its best rugby of the season.

As the season rolls round to its end the boys now turn their attention to inter house games and also to the annual match against the Former Pupils on Sunday 25th March.

This game kicks off at Duchess at 3 p.m and the FP’s will be captained by Neil Calder and feature many of the players from Lomond’s very successful side of two years ago.

The rugby will be preceded by the Hockey FP match at Ardencaple at 1 p.m. and former pupils and parents are very welcome to attend what is always a great social occasion.
