Burgh side in action

BURGH coach Liam McIntyre will unveil a faster more furious rugby style away to high-fliers Garnock in the cup.

The former Helensburgh player is keen for his young side to develop a different approach to play to their strengths and avoid falling foul of

refereeing decisions.

McIntyre told the Advertiser: “Ever since I used to play we’ve adopted a rucking style with the ball often on the ground.

“But for refs this is a grey area and they each have their different interpretations.

“So my style is to keep the ball off the ground and be a bit more inter-linking.

“I’m trying to create a more fast and furious style — it won’t be done over night but we have to start

sometime and this cup game is an ideal time to do it.”

Garnock are currently two

divisions above Helensburgh, sitting second in the Scottish Hydro Electric National League Division 1 with promotion still within their grasp.

McIntyre expects them to field a side with a good mix of youth and experience, much like his own, with a large number of players under 20.

He added: “Like Garnock, our squad is blessed with young talent and these guys are more receptive to changes in style than say guys who’ve been rucking all their rugby life.

“The club is full of talent and the players deserve their chance in the first team.

“I’ll be fielding a very young side and give some guys from the twos a run out as well.

“It will be a strong side though I might rest a few people who have been carrying niggling injuries.”

The cup will provide a

welcome distraction to league duty, where Burgh remain in danger of relegation.

With the game against bottom placed Duns postponed last Saturday, McIntyre feels his side are two results from safety.

But first comes the cup. He said: “Whatever the result, if we show a good display of rugby then I’ll be happy.”
