DINNER GUESTS: Derek Bowman, Peter Holmes, George Jack, Tom Inglis, Alastair Hart, Duncan Cameron and Neil Sloan.

SCOTTISH Rugby Union President George Jack praised Helensburgh Cricket and Rugby Club for their tremendous contribution and support for sport in the area.

Attending the Club’s Annual Dinner on Saturday, the SRU President was impressed to learn that Ardencaple was home not only to rugby and cricket but hockey and even the Highland Games.

The grounds are also being used by Ardencaple Boys Club for their Annual Youth Football Tournaments not to mention providing the home for Helensburgh Archery Club.

Jack said the club was a shining example of a true community sports club.

He expressed his delight at the fact the rugby club and the SRU jointly funded community coach Sam Lawrie.

Lawrie regularly visits all the primary and secondary schools promoting active sports involvement and assisting teachers run numerous events.

Club President Tom Inglis said: “It was tremendous to hear the club being praised by Scottish Rugby for all we are trying to do for sport in the area.

“The decision by our club to co-fund a community coach from our own limited resources was a huge one. But last Friday all 10 of the local Primary schools participated in our inaugural tournament, which has given us immense satisfaction.

“The work done by so many unpaid volunteers goes largely unrecognised locally, but President Jack was hugely encouraged by what we as a local sports club are achieving at Ardencaple.”
