No rest for Olympic sailing hero

OLYMPIC sailing manager Stephen Park arrived back in Britain on Monday having led Team GB’s sailors to their most successful medal haul ever.

But the former Burgh resident and Helensburgh Sailing Club member — whose proud parents still reside in the area — has little time to soak up the success, as he prepares to head straight back to China with the Paralympic sailing team.

After 34 days of 8am starts and midnight finishes, the RYA Olympic Racing manager could be forgiven for stifling a yawn or two.Instead, he is still buzzing from the success in the Qingdao waters, where Team GB scooped a record six medals — including four golds.

He told Sport Scene: “It is all slowly sinking in, and it seems sailing has caught the imagination of the country. When you are at the Olympic village, you are kind of isolated from the real world so it isn’t until you get back you realise how big a deal it all is."
