Cricket: Burgh rub salt into the wounds

Helensburgh 51 for 4

Irvine 49 ao

Irvine came to Helensburgh with revenge on their mind on Saturday afternoon after last weekend’s SCU Trophy defeat.

Burgh was desperate to go through the season undefeated at home, and fortress Helensburgh more than lived up to its name.

After winning the toss, captain Lang put the opposition in and the away team’s West Indian professional Arjune came out firing. But, with the score on 25, Stevens had him caught behind by Jones for 21, and soon the wickets were falling steadily.

Irvine were bowled out for just 49, with Fisher the pick of the bowlers finishing with figures of four for 20 off 10 overs and Stevens and Steward picking up two wickets apiece.

This was a mixed performance in the field; from outstanding work behind the stumps by Ryan Jones — taking the best catch seen at Helensburgh for a good few years — to a missed run-out by veteran Davies, who was clearly still in Stirling celebrating the cup victory.

In reply, the Burgh batsmen finished the game quickly, but not without losing a few wickets. Some indifferent batting from Davies and Steward failed to trouble the scorers, whilst Elawady hit a huge six that had the rugby players running for cover.

Bowers finished on 23 not out with just seven scoring shots, guiding the Burgh side home to 51-4. This capped off what has been a tremendous season for captain Lang and his team, from gaining promotion last term and looking to consolidate their position in the top division, to finishing third in the league, remaining unbeaten at home, and a major cup victory putting the icing on the cake.

On Sunday, the Ardencaple XI also claimed victory against Gatehouse of Fleet. With captain Lewis back at the helm, the away side batted first and wickets fell at regular intervals with only two of the opposing batsmen reaching double figures.

Frew, Batty and the returning Anderson took two wickets each, with Dodson returning the best figures of three for six off six overs leaving Gatehouse 71 all out.

In reply, the home side reached the total for the loss of five wickets. York top scored with 19, and Jones and Batty guided the team home, both on 10 not out.
