A dragon's den double
BURGH wheelchair tennis star Gordon Reid started his Paralympic journey with a double win in Wales.
Reid, now British men’s number one ranked player, has set his sights on a medal at London 2012.
And he kicked off this mission in style, scooping the men’s singles and men’s doubles titles on Sunday at the Esporta Cardiff Wheelchair Tennis Tournament.
Top seed Reid, 17, edged out experienced Yorkshireman Kevin Plowman in two tie-break sets to clinch his fourth senior singles title of 2008.
Reid then went head-to-head with Plowman again in the men’s doubles final, the young Scot partnering Middlesex’s Marc McCarroll to another straight sets victory, bringing him his third senior doubles title of the season.
After cruel draws led to disappointment at the Beijing Paralympics, Sunday’s successes in Cardiff at the penultimate British-based world ranking event of the 2008 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, provided the perfect tonic for the Hermitage Academy student.
Reid stays in Britain for his next tournament, the Nottingham Indoors, which begins on October 30.
