Wanted: sports stars' nominations
NOMINATIONS are now being sought for the Helensburgh and Lomond Community Spirit Awards, run by the Helensburgh Advertiser in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Helensburgh Garelochside.
The title of Sports Person of the Year is one of seven categories in the popular annual awards event which has grown in stature year on year.
Advertiser Sports Editor David Christie said: 'This is a great opportunity for clubs and individuals to name who they think would be deserving of the title. Anyone in any sport and of any age can be nominated.
'There are many people in the Helensburgh and Lomond community who would be fitting recipients of the award, but first we need our readers to come up with nominations.
Last year"s winner was Lomond School S6 pupil Morgan Gladden, a member of the City of Glasgow Gymnastic Club for the previous 10 years.
In 2004, she was the youngest member of her club team which won the Scottish Championships, and represented Scotland in the British club championships.
Morgan represented Scotland again in 2005 and 2006 at the UK national championships.
The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges.
The awards ceremony will be held at Helensburgh Golf Club on April 27, with special guest Walter Smith, manager of Rangers Football Club.
'It could be a youngster who has shown remarkable skill in a given sport, a person of more mature years who has shown commendable skill and dedication to a particular sport over the years or it could be a person - or indeed a team - who has excelled in the past year.
Nominations can be made through a voting form inside the paper.
