Safety fears reach wrong conclusion

Comment Bubble Comments (0) Printer Print Article

I have read with interest your article based on Mr Dickson’s safety fears in relation to the one-way system to be introduced in the area and feel compelled to take issue with his conclusions.

In May 2007, I did write objecting to the proposals as I felt it would increase commercial and private vehicles coming through Waverley to access Kenilworth. On May 9, I had a meeting at my home with Mr A Kerr, area manager roads and amenity, and Mr C Divertie, planning officer, after which, having discussed my fears and heard their traffic calming and safety reasons for the area, I rescinded my earlier objections.

Further, having been a resident in Waverley Avenue for almost 40 years, I am delighted that Drumfork Lane will no longer be accessible to the mindless morons who use it as a speedway dirt track from Drumfork Road to Cardross Road and vice versa.

With the new system, vehicles covering the short distance from Waverley Avenue to Kenilworth will be unable to attain the manic speed of the present motorists.

Children walking from Waverley Avenue can exit left and traverse 100 yards to the pedestrian entrance to the school, while those using Kenilworth can exit right to the main vehicle and pedestrian entrance at the new roundabout. Both routes being non-accessible to any vehicular traffic.

Mr Dickson’s fears may be motivated more by no longer being able to access Helensburgh via Drumfork Lane and having to traverse to Ashton Lane, Waverley Avenue and Drumfork Lane to get beck to his home at the East End of Kenilworth, than the more emotive issue of child safety.

Councillor Morton’s comments are irrelevant as, unlike Mr Dickson, once the decision had been taken to build the school at this site she, and the rest of the council, would have been aware of the plans for the new road system. Her present concerns, therefore, do not hold water. Although the new school site does.
