Time for a younger man in the job?
The weakness of trying to run a council coalition administration with nominally Independent councillors is becoming apparent.
The administration requires to take collective responsibility for decisions and act as a cohesive group.
That is the reality of administration in modern local government.
If independent councillors are not willing to abide by that convention then they have the option to resign from the administration group. It is self indulgent to behave otherwise.
Councillor Freeman may have served his constituents well over the years, but he could have accepted defeat in the vote on the appointment for the chair of the local area committee with better grace than his letter last week suggested.
The majority of the council supported Councillor Robb for the job. Perhaps they concluded that it is time for a younger man with fresh new ideas on tackling the challenges facing Helensburgh and district.
Councillor Robb has shown a fearless determination not to be inhibited by the old cosy way of doing things in the past.
