This week the Advertiser is proud to launch the Helensburgh and Lomond Community Spirit Awards 2010.
The awards, run in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Helensburgh Garelochside, are designed to pay tribute to the people who work selflessly to make our community a better place in which to live.
The initiative follows the very successful Community Spirit Awards run in recent years and will broadly follow the same format, giving readers the opportunity to nominate people whom they believe deserve recognition.
The categories areas follows:
• Citizen of the Year (to be voted for by Advertiser readers).
• Unsung Hero of the Year.
• Achiever in Adversity (new category - see adjoining story).
• Young Achiever of the Year.
• Sports Person of the Year.
• Musician of the Year.
• Primary School Young Journalist of the Year.
• Lifetime Achievement Award.
Readers can make their nominations by using the form on the right.
Advertiser editor David Carnduff said: “We are delighted once again to be launching the Community Spirit Awards in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Helensburgh Garelochside.
David said the success of the awards in the past have been down to the support shown by the community who had enthusiastically nominated candidates in all categories.
“We are calling on their support once again to give the deserving people in our community the opportunity to have their good work and skills recognised.”
It was important to bear in mind, he said, that the title Citizen of the Year would be decided in a vote by readers, while a panel of judges would select winners in all other categories.
This year a new category, Achiever in Adversity, is being launched and the primary schools’ involvement, which last year was on a ecology theme, has been changed this year to Young Journalist of the Year to give youngsters the chance to demonstrate their writing and story-telling skills.
Ann Trail, Rotary club president, said: “The Community Spirit Awards have grown in stature year on year and we are confident that this year will see that trend continuing. We are very fortunate in having many dedicated, skilled and motivated people in Helensburgh and Lomond and we hope the community will rally round once again to give them the accolades they deserve.
Ann stressed that the awards were for all age groups — for example, the Musician of the Year could be someone who has spent many dedicated years with a choir, orchestra or musical group, or a young person showing outstanding musical abilities. Likewise, the Sports Person of the Year could be a youngster showing exceptional skills in a particular sport or an older person who had had an outstanding record of achievement.
“We hope that the introduction of Achievers in Adversity will add an exciting new dimension to the awards, and complement the other categories that have proven to be very popular in the past.”
The awards have again been endorsed by Provost Billy Petrie, who said: “The Community Spirit Awards are a great idea which help to highlight the tremendous work done by voluntary groups and individuals throughout the area. The Advertiser and the Rotary Club of Helensburgh Garelochside are to be congratulated once again for continuing this very worthwhile initiative.”
Nomination forms will appear during the next few weeks, after which Citizen of the Year voting slips will be printed.
The awards ceremony will take place in the Victoria Halls on April 26 when the guest of honour will be Walter Smith, Manager of Rangers Football Club, who will present the prizes.
