MEMBERS of the Helensburgh Oratorio Choir are putting the finishing touches to the programme for their eagerly-awaited autumn concert in the town next weekend.

The programme will feature a performance of Joseph Haydn’s Paukenmasse – Mass in Time of War – and J.S. Bach’s Kantate BMV 214, Tönet ihr Pauken! Erschallet Trompeton! which translates as ‘Sound the Trumpet – Beat the Drums’.

Performers will include principal trumpet Simon Bird and vocal soloists Barbara Cole Walton (soprano), Judy Brown (mezzo-soprano), Robert Forrest (tenor) and James Corrigan (baritone), accompanied by an orchestra of players from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, led by Justine Watts.

The choir’s musical director Jonathon Swinard will conduct the programme of lively and affecting music at Helensburgh Parish Church in Colquhoun Square at 7.30pm on Sunday, November 5.

In addition, there’s a pre-concert talk with Jonathon Swinard in room 1 at the church halls complex. Titled ‘Happy birthday to whom? Bach’s unwanted gift and Haydn’s musical surprises’, the talk takes place at 6.45pm on November 5, 45 minutes before the music begins.

Tickets for the talk are priced £3 and include reserved seating for the concert and refreshments.

Concert tickets are £12, students/young people £6 and children £2. Tickets for the pre-concert talk are available from choir members, the Scandinavian Shop and the Parish Church Office, or at the door.
