A coffee morning held by Cardross Knitting Group on Saturday raised over £800 to fund the group’s charitable work at home and abroad.

Held at Cardross Church Halls, the fundraiser welcomed visitors from across Helensburgh to browse their hand knitted items and buy up raffle tickets.

Stalls of scarves, knitted hedgehogs and brooches all brought in much-needed funds for the group, as did donations made on the door.

The event raised a total of £830 in only two hours. The money will go towards supporting the group’s charitable efforts by purchasing materials and contributing to the church hall for use of the space.

Rebecca MacLachlan, chair of the Knitting Group, said: “There was great support from the community on Saturday. We had to pull in extra tables and chairs. So much hard work went into it and I’m glad it was so well received.”

The Knitting Group was set up five years ago, initially to knit for Save the Children appeals and to supply Glasgow baby units with clothing. Hundreds of premature babies have been kept snug in hospital thanks to the hats and cardigans knitted by the group over the years.

The group also knit hats and jumpers for African children, the so-called ‘fish and chip’ babies whose parents are so poor they wrap them in newspaper rather than cloth.

Last year the group managed to raise an incredible £486.00 by knitting poppies for Poppy Scotland to mark Remembrance Day and the members are currently knitting ‘twiddle muffs’ to help people with dementia.

Ms MacLachlan added: “We are always open to new members. We have 17 at the moment across a very mixed age group. We’re also open to people who don’t know how to knit, we’re happy to have people learn with us.”
