Students from four Helensburgh schools showed tremendous creativity and a flair for writing in the 2016 Young Writer competition organised by Helensburgh Rotary Club.

The two gold medals went to Kilcreggan Primary School.

Essays or poems on the subject of Our World is Beautiful were submitted by 72 juniors, aged 7-10, and 11 intermediates, aged 11-13.

Competition organiser Jack Rudram said: "Subjects varied from the descriptive to the imaginary and fantastical, with a tremendously high standard being exhibited by all the entries. "All entrants received a certificate of participation."

Rotary Youth Service convener Adam Muggoch said: “We had an amazingly high number of entries and the judges were tremendously impressed by the overall high quality of the work, which made picking the winners an extremely difficult task.

"It is a credit to all the young people who took part, and their teachers, that the competition was so close.

"Congratulations are due to everyone who participated. The two gold medal entries will go forward to the West of Scotland round of the competition.”

The Rotary Club of Helensburgh runs a number of different competitions for young people, and further information is available from any member.
