ORGANISERS of the Rhu and Shandon Gala have expressed their dismay that councillors have backed plans to install a synthetic pitch on Ardenconnel Field.

Members of the local authority’s Planning, Protective Services and Licensing Committee gave the green light to the development of the pitch during a meeting last Thursday.

The area has traditionally been used to host the annual Rhu and Shandon Gala festivities with up to 1,000 visitors descending each summer.

But now organisers say they will have to move.

A statement from the Rhu and Shandon Gala read: “Rhu and Shandon Gala are disappointed that planning permission for Ardenconnel Field to be turned into a 3G pitch and fenced-off has been granted.

“The gala, which attracts 1,000 visitors and is the biggest community event in Rhu and Shandon, has been held on Ardenconnel Field for the last 15 years since it was resurrected from its days on the village green.”

As a result of the redevelopment the existing grass pitch will be resurfaced to a synthetic 3G surface, and eight 15m high floodlights are to be be installed.

A perimeter fence will also be erected around the pitch.

There were dozens of objections to the application, from residents in the area as well as the community council with some claiming the lights would have had an “adverse effect” on the “semi-rural” surroundings.

Another objector stated the pitch would have “no community benefit at all for Rhu”.

However, council planners noted the playing field is property of the Ministry of Defence, with its primary function being a sports pitch.

Rhu Primary School, did, however, back the plans, as they would have a year-round facility which would boost pupils’ health and wellbeing.

It’s understood the facilities will also be available for free to the school.

Due to the number of objections, a public discretionary hearing was held in Rhu Community Centre where those who had made representation were able to speak.

Despite the objections, council members approved the application.

Spokeswoman for the gala, Fiona Baker, said “While we are disappointed that Ardenconnel Field will be removed from general community use as an open playing field it does, of course, belong to the MoD and will continue as a sports pitch.

“We hope the Royal Navy will work with the gala and the villages to help find a sustainable solution and ensure the gala can continue.”

It’s been revealed that the gala organisers have been thrown a lifeline as The Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club have generously stepped in to save the 2016 Gala, which will take place at the Northern on June 11.

Chairman Malcolm Pearson promises a great day out for all the family in the best gala tradition.

This will include new events as well as the old favourites of family races and games, the fun dog show, bouncy castles and a carousel, BBQ and tea tent, a bar and stalls with the procession leaving Rhu Marina at noon as usual.
