A MUSICIAN from Cardross is recording his debut album with help from a Grammy award-winning music producer.

Fiddle player Ryan Young will be joined by Boston-based producer Jesse Lewis in September, to record his album of traditional Scottish tunes.

Jesse flew across the Atlantic in May to meet with Ryan and look for suitable recording studios which were available for acoustic recording and housed a piano.

This is the first time Jesse, who has worked with The Silk Road Ensemble and Bela Fleck, has ventured on to UK soil for work and he is looking forward to it.

He said: “Ryan’s pacing (when playing music) is way beyond his years. There’s so much talent in this young man already, I can’t wait to see what the future has in store.

“I’m so excited to spend some quality time in Scotland, making this album the best it can be.”

Ryan has recently graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland – based in Glasgow – with the highest mark ever given at the Scottish school.

He is now leading a new wave of traditional fiddle-players who are breathing new life into “old and forgotten music”.

After finding success at the BBC Hogmanay show, Ryan went on to share the main stage at T in the Park with Paolo Nutini and Phil Cunningham, performing for 80,000 people.

But before Jesse returns in the autumn to record his album, Ryan has a busy summer of performances, including an appearance at the Willie Clancy Festival in County Clare.

Ryan told the Advertiser: “Jesse understands what I’m trying to do with the music without me having to use words, and he helps push me in the right direction.

“When playing through a tune at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, he turned the process into telling a story, whispering his suggestions about where the story was leading.

“This has spurred me on to find new possibilities in my music and helped me to find confidence that I didn’t know I had,” he added.
