An online petition calling for better safety measures on the A82 has been launched after the latest fatal accident on the busy road.

Arrochar resident Chris Johnstone has launched the petition on www.change.org calling for CCTV to be installed in danger zones and for more police to patrol the area.

The petition was launched after 51-year-old John Allan, from Lanark, died following a two-car collision on the road at Firkin Point, near Tarbet.

Chris told the Advertiser: “Three people have lost their lives on the stretch between Balloch and Tarbet in the last two months, and that's three too many.

“It's the same every year, and the lack of action from the authorities is shameful. The school holidays are starting and the risk of another accident is only going to get worse.

“Very seldom will you see marked or unmarked police cars on that stretch of the road – sometimes it seems easier for them to sit at Tarbet and catch someone doing 33 miles an hour in a 30 zone.”

Chris's petition had attracted 828 supporters at the time of writing: you can find it by searching for A82 on the change.org website or via the 'Three Villages Hall, Arrochar' page on Facebook.

Among those who have signed the petition so far is Mr Allan's cousin, Tracey Keenan from Hamilton, who wrote the day after the June 19 accident: “He was only 51 and had everything to live for.

“His wife was also injured but thankfully got discharged from hospital today.

“They were just about to retire together and travel. Please do something before anyone else is killed.”

Arrochar resident Daniel Fryer added: “This road needs to be made into a dual carriageway with a central reservation.

"A lot of the dangerous driving is caused by people growing frustrated with tourists dropping from 60 [mph] to 40 to read the signs or enjoy the view."

Kevin Haggerty from Tarbet said: "I'm a local who has nearly been killed on numerous occasions by overtaking traffic on this road.

“I don't understand why no protection measures are used on this route.”

The accident which killed Mr Allan came less than two weeks after Thomas Gaudie, a 33-year-old motorcyclist from Glasgow, died following a crash between a bike and a car on the same road, this time near Luss.

A Transport Scotland spokesperson told the Advertiser: “Safety is of paramount importance across the trunk road network and we assess its safety performance on an annual basis.

“This robust, evidence based assessment considers the locations and causations of accidents.

“The A82 between Arden and Stoneymollan is currently being investigated further and this will be completed in the coming months.

“We are also looking at the layby layouts between Balloch and Tarbet to see whether any improvements can be made to assist drivers in using them more safely.

“We are also undertaking works at Stoneymollan roundabout this financial year. This includes providing high friction surfacing on the A82 northbound approach to the roundabout, rationalising signing, road marking improvements and other measures to ensure visibility on the approaches leads to improved safety for roundabout users.

“Other potential future improvements will be dependent on the outcomes of the our investigations.”
