FOUR men have been arrested after a youth was allegedly seriously assaulted during a large scale disturbance which sprawled through Helensburgh town centre last night.

Police have launched a probe after another man was attacked at the forecourt of Tesco Petrol Station, on East Clyde Street, during the disturbance which is thought to have involved around 20 youths.

The incidents are understood to be linked and police report they are the result of a pre-planned clash which was coordinated via social media.

Police say the disturbance began at Helensburgh Central Rail Station, where four men were arrested following the alleged serious assault of a youth.

A spokesman for Helensburgh Police said: “As a result of this disturbance a youth was allegedly seriously assaulted and British Transport Police, assisted by officers from Police Scotland apprehended four males.”

The disturbance then spilled down to the town's seafront and a man was assaulted at the petrol station.

The spokesman added: “This incident is currently being investigated by officers from Police Scotland.

"Extensive enquiries are now underway to identify all persons involved in last night's incident.”

Police Scotland have increased patrols within the Helensburgh town centre and stress to any person intent on committing anti-social behaviour, that such conduct will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly by officers.

Anyone who has information regarding the disturbances last night is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
