Adventurous eaters are now able to try something a bit different at a local newsagent - cricket-based snacks!

Foodies visiting Loch Lomond News can choose from salt and vinegar, chilli and lime and English herb-roasted crickets, or cranberry and orange and coconut and cacao energy bars.

Insects are eaten widely in other parts of the world, but are relatively new to the UK.

Andy Howell, owner of Loch Lomond News, said: “This is the first time I have tried edible insects and I must say I am hooked! I’ve only tried the English Herb Roasted Crickets at the moment and I must say I found them to be delicious. I am going to try the Chilli & Lime next.”

As to why he decided to stock the unusual products, he said: “We always like to try new things here at Loch Lomond News, so when I saw an article on Twitter a few weeks back, it really caught my eye. Like most people I’m a fan of ‘I’m A Celeb’ and find the insect eating challenges fascinating, so to read about insects as a sustainable future food source was very interesting to say the least. Hopefully people are brave enough to try them as they really are quite delicious!”

Foodies can try the products at Loch Lomond News now. The next major food & drink event at Lomond Shores is the Loch Lomond Food and Drink Festival on September 3 and 4.
