A YOUNG Burgh girl who has aspirations to pave a career in journalism is doing her CV no harm after learning she is in the running for a BBC Television reporting award.

Jillian Paton (14), of Machrie Drive, won a competition a few months ago to write and present a report on the progress of killer whale Keiko, start of the hit film ‘Free Willy’, for BBC Television’s ‘Newsround’.

However, the Hermitage Academy pupil, impressed the producers so much, she has been nominated for the programme’s ‘Young Reporter of the Year’ award.

The initial television report was a result of Jillian sending in a report about the film ‘Babe’.

This was part of an assignment set by the Press Pack, a journalism club, in conjunction with the Radio Times magazine. She flew to Oregon in the US with a producer to film the report.

But out of 120,000 Press Pack members, Jillian is one of the privileged few to be nominated for one of five Newsround awards.
