PET owners have been asked to be aware after a potentially deadly plant was spotted on the shoreline.

Hemlock Water Dropwort, commonly known as poisonous parsnip has been sighted on the Rosneath peninsula and Ardmore Point following the recent bad weather.

Vets suspect that the plant will be in other locations also and are asking pet owners to stay vigilant.

Heather Craig, Veterinary Surgeon at Parklea Vets said: "Poisonous Parsnip is the colloquial name for Hemlock Water Dropwort because it looks like parsnips. The poisonous part is the tuber (root like structure). It is found along the shoreline especially after stormy weather when the tubers are exposed.

"Watch your dog when out on shorelines especially, discourage them from eating anything and if you see him or her eating anything, get in touch as soon and possible. The effects after eating the plant start within 20minutes so timing is very important. "
