A RESIDENT of Glen Fruin is appealing for more to be done to stop the fly tipping and littering in the area.

Suzie Benedetti Hitchell contacted the Advertiser to highlight the issues which she believes have been ongoing for around a year.

Suzie said she has approached the council repeatedly and asked for something to be done but says her requests fall silent because Glen Fruin is “hidden” out the way.

She said: “I’ve repeatedly asked Argyll and Bute Council to send in litter pickers or street cleaners and/or fly tipping staff and I have pinpointed the location of the litter. But it never gets done because we are hidden out the way.”

Suzie believes that the problem has escalated since the change to the three weekly bin collections.

She added: “Even before the waste disposal changed to three weekly uplifts we are often ignored (despite phone calls) and with the change it is worse! It’s been four weeks since our blue bins were emptied.”

Suzie and her daughter took it upon themselves to tackle the problem and recently ended up doing a litter pick and filled five bin liners.

Suzie realises that it is the people who throw the litter away who are to blame for the mess but she feels that as the residents pay full council tax they should be catered for when the request the uplift of litter and fly tipped items.

An Argyll and Bute Council spokeswoman said: “We would love to be able to do all that our communities want us to do but that unfortunately just isn’t an option.

“Littering and fly tipping is avoidable, and if people would please stop doing it, this would keep our areas pleasant and enjoyable for everyone to use.

“We are committed to ensuring public spaces are maintained to as high a standard as possible and when littering or fly tipping does happen we will do our best to support wherever possible.

“Items can be taken to any of our civic amenity sites. If anyone has particular concerns about fly tipping they are welcome to call us on 01546 605514.”
