A DAY of dance saw 250 primary seven children from Helensburgh and Lomond schools come together to practice Scottish country dance.

The annual event is run jointly by Argyll and Bute Council Active Schools and the Helensburgh Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and encourages primary seven pupils from schools across Helensburgh and Lomond to get involved.

School children attended either the morning or afternoon session at the Victoria Halls for the programme of Scottish Country Dance.

Helen Rodger and Irene Smith from the Helensburgh Branch of RSCDS were on hand to provide dance instructions, demonstrations and to encourage the youngsters to get involved.

Ms Smith said: "This year the children danced very well, obviously knowing their dances and enjoying themselves judging by the smiles and laughter from the floor.

"Teaching staff from the local primary schools have worked hard with the pupils during the term in order to learn and practice the programme of dances selected."

Other members of the Helensburgh Branch of the RSCDS went along to the event either for the whole day or one of the sessions to volunteer as stewards and make sure everything ran smoothly, helping the pupils and even joining in with the dances.

Active Schools coordinator Martin Caldwell, said: "Active Schools would like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers from Helensburgh Branch of the RSCDS for giving their time and supporting the event and also to teaching staff involved and pupils for conducting themselves so well on the day."

The RSCDS branch is committed to encouraging young people to try Scottish country dancing and enjoy seeing the children enjoy themselves during the Day of Dance.
