A SQUAD of 14 youngsters from a Garelochhead youth project enlisted in the Tartan Army recently as they enjoyed to their first-ever Scotland football match.

The Route 81 contingent made the trip to Hampden on Sunday, March 26, to see Scotland take on Slovenia in a World Cup 2018 qualifier – and a last-minute winner from striker Chris Martin ensured an experience they’ll never forget as the home side secured a 1-0 victory.

The trip was made possible by The Tartan Army Children’s Charity, with each youngster also receiving a free Scotland football shirt, Scotland flag, £10 cash and a £5 food voucher from the charity.

Jack, 12, told the Advertiser: “I was so happy to get on this trip as it was my first time ever seeing my national team. The match was really exciting and the best match I have ever watched. The best bit was when Scotland scored in the 88th minute. I would like to say thank you because the match was a dream to go to.”

Michael, 14, added: “I was really excited to hear I had got on the Scotland football match trip and when I found out I got a football top too, I was so happy. I want to say thank you so much to TACC for all the goodies and money. This has made me want to go to more Scotland matches.”

On arrival at the stadium the group were met by the sound of bagpipes and Jim Hart, chairman of the TACC.

It was then discovered that one of the group, Andrew, 16, was a bagpiper and he was quickly handed the instrument before standing and playing Flower of Scotland to hundreds of passing Scottish supporters.

Trainee youth worker Dillon MacDonald, 17, said: “It was great to see the young people experience their first ever Scotland match. Seeing them experience the atmosphere was electric and a privilege.”

The Route 81 Youth Project is based in Centre 81, Garelochhead and is open to all 11-18 year olds within the catchment area of Hermitage Academy.
