A GROUP of kind-hearted Helensburgh residents donned a variety of stylish and colourful headgear to raise money for the Brain Tumour Research charity.

Clients and support workers at the Enable ladies’ group took part in the national charity’s Wear a Hat Day initiative in memory of their friend Amanda Provan.

Amanda, who was a support worker with the charity in Helensburgh, died six years ago aged just 29 after losing her battle with a brain tumour.

And in addition to raising money towards their £250 target through a JustGiving web page, the group also received generous donations in person from a series of enthusiastic supporters.

Amanda’s friend Mandy Sweeney said: “Amanda worked for a long time with Enable but passed away only a few weeks before her 30th birthday.

“We still miss her jokes, her great sense of humour and her big smile. She was a lovely friend to us.”

Memorial benches in Garelochhead and at Kidston Park in Helensburgh act as permanent memorials to Amanda – but the group was keen to do something special this year to honour her memory.

Mandy continued: “Some of us made our own hats, while others bought plain hats last week and decorated them ourselves.

“It’s a nice way to remember Amanda, a fun day for us, and a great way to get talking about her again. It’s also a great way to raise awareness as well as showing we’ll never forget Amanda – she’ll always be in our thoughts.”
